I want to express my strong support for H.R. 3172, the Homes for Every Local Protector, Educator, and Responder (HELPER) Act introduced by U.S. Representatives John Rutherford, Al Lawson, John Katko, and Bonnie Watson Coleman.
The HELPER Act creates a home loan program within the Federal Housing Administration to help our law enforcement officers, fire fighters, EMTs, paramedics, and preK-12 teachers (“first responders”) by making homeownership more affordable. The program will function similarly to the VA home loan program managed by the Department of Veterans Affairs. It will build upon the Federal Housing Administration’s (FHA) Good Neighbor Next Door program to allow law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, and preK-12 teachers the ability to obtain a low-interest, fully insured home loan with no down payment and no monthly mortgage insurance costs.
Our nation’s first responders dedicate their lives to serving their communities. The challenges these brave individuals faced during the COVID-19 pandemic only further prove their dedication. I believe it is time for us to honor those that serve as first responders by empowering them to purchase their first home at an affordable price so that they can provide for their families and continue to serve their communities. I ask that you support the HELPER Act so that we can give back to those that have given so much for us.
Sincerely,
