Professional Standards

At the River Counties Association of REALTORS® (RCAR), professionalism matters.

There is an important distinction between a real estate licensee and a REALTOR®. Only those who have chosen to uphold and abide by the Code of Ethics established by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) may use the REALTOR® designation.

The REALTOR® Code of Ethics

First adopted more than a century ago, the REALTOR® Code of Ethics is a cornerstone of professional real estate practice.

It is a living document that continues to evolve alongside changes in real estate law and industry standards. Over time, the Code has been reviewed, revised, and refined to reflect the highest expectations of ethical conduct and professional responsibility.

Addressing Questions or Concerns

Even with the best intentions, misunderstandings or conflicts may occasionally arise. These may occur between REALTORS®, or between REALTORS® and their clients or customers.

In many cases, the Code of Ethics provides guidance that helps clarify expectations, resolve concerns, and maintain trust within the profession.

Start With Communication

Many concerns involving REALTORS® stem from simple miscommunication or misunderstanding.

If you are experiencing an issue with a REALTOR®, you are encouraged to first contact the REALTOR®’s managing broker. Open and constructive communication often resolves concerns quickly and effectively, without the need for further action.

When Further Action Is Necessary

If a concern cannot be resolved through communication with the managing broker, RCAR offers a formal process for reviewing potential violations of the Code of Ethics.

This process exists to protect consumers, uphold professional standards, and support accountability within the REALTOR® community.
